What is Dry Needling?
Here at SOLE THERAPY Dry Needling is one of our main treatment modalities, we use it every day on multiple areas of the lower limb to great effect.
Fun fact the team here at SOLE THERAPY also provide courses to other podiatrists and health professionals in dry needling
So What is Dry Needling?
Dry Needling is a technique like acupuncture whereby a fine sterile acupuncture needle is inserted into soft tissue to facilitate a myofascial release or release of a ‘Knot’ (Myofascial release refers to the release of hyper-irritable areas in bands of muscle and other connective tissue). Dry needling differs from acupuncture as it is based on specific anatomical structures and principles of western medicine.
How does it work?
The current evidence suggests the mechanism of dry needling has a few pathways.
The first being the tiny needles create a ‘micro trauma’ which initiate an injury response to the brain and intern kick starts the natural healing process of the body. The second being when a needle is inserted to a hyperirritable spot it elicits a ‘twitch’ response. Once elicited the muscles fibres relax, tissue perfusion is improved, and inflammation is reduced.
Why use it?
Dry needling can decrease muscular pain and stiffness, increase range of motion and flexibility, and speed up recovery time from injuries. Its great for longer chronic conditions effecting the lower limb.
