SKIN FUNGUS

Skin fungus; Tinea Pedis; is more commonly known as Athlete’s Foot. We see it regularly on our patient’s feet and most of them don’t even know it’s there!

Athlete’s Foot is a skin infection caused by a group of fungi called dermatophytes. Usually the skin is an effective defense against fungi. However if a fungus is exposed to the right combination of conditions it can thrive. Warm, humid, wet environment in combination with a reduction in the body’s immunity allows fungi to become overactive and reproduce to excessive numbers.

Athlete’s Foot usually start between the fourth and fifth toes of the feet. If not treated quickly the fungus can spread to the soles of the feet and toenails- see our blog on Nail Fungus for more information!

Signs that you have Athlete’s Foot include:

  • Itchy feet
  • Redness, especially around the outer sole of the foot
  • Wet skin in between the toes
  • Flaking skin
  • Scaling
  • Peeling
  • Smelly feet
  • Burning

Treatment of Athlete’s Foot involves:

  1. Treatment of the infection
  2. Preventing the infection from reoccurring
