HOW DOES DIABETES AFFECT MT FEET?
Diabetes is a complex group of conditions that results in the body’s sugar levels being too high. The most common form is Type 2 Diabetes. It is a progressive condition where the body initially is resistant to the normal effects of insulin and then eventually loses the ability to produce enough insulin. Having diabetes increases the risk of developing a wide range of foot problems, often because of two complications of the disease: nerve damage (neuropathy) and poor circulation.

Having diabetes increases the risk of developing a wide range of foot problems, often because of two complications of the disease: nerve damage (neuropathy) and poor circulation. - POOR CIRCULATION: Poor circulation of the legs and feet can lead to serious complications including open wounds that don’t heal properly and cramping in the calves.
- CHARCOT FOOT: Charcot’s foot is a condition causing weakening of the bones in the foot that can occur in people who have significant nerve damage (neuropathy). As the disorder progresses, the joints collapse and the foot takes on an abnormal shape, such as a rocker-bottom appearance.
For those with diabetes, small foot problems can turn into serious complications. It is recommended that people with diabetes see our Podiatrist’s regularly to prevent ulceration, foot complications and infection.
