Ingrown Toenails

Tight shoes or socks, or incorrect nail trimming are the most common cause of ingrown toenails in children, although sometimes the tendency for nails to curve inward is inherited. When the nail breaks the skin, serious infections can result. Parents should never try to dig the nail out at home. At the first signs of inflammation around the edge of the nail and pain on squeezing of the nail it is strongly advised to seek treatment by our podiatrist’s early as if left too long a surgical procedure may be required. The surgical procedure removes the ingrown toenail permanently and this is called a PNA (partial nail avulsion). This procedure is commonly conducted at Sole Therapy in our clinic rooms under local anaesthetic.
